Reporting to the Senior Manager – Contracts and Inspection, the jobholder will assist the Technical Agent – Horticulture and Arboriculture in carrying out action plans against various diseases, insects, larvae or other pests. She or he will also take an active part in projects involving landscaping and tending trees and plants, such as planting, felling and guying, carried out in the City’s rights-of-way, parks, green spaces, riverbanks or public places.

To ensure the longevity and proper functioning of all public facilities, equipment, and buildings, in order to support sustainable development and improve citizens’ quality of life.

General responsibilities and goals:

The jobholder’s main responsibilities are as follows:
• Detect diseases, insects, larvae and other pests and weeds noxious to public health.
• Help plan and coordinate activities related to various diseases, insects, larvae or other pests, and related to the replacement and planting of trees.
• Participate, along with various municipal departments, in planning, developing, monitoring and supervising various projects.
• Take samples or ensure that they are taken.
• Stake out and tag trees as necessary for arboricultural work.
• Carry out quality control over work performed by contractors or subcontractors for guarantee and payment purposes.
• Record data and draft reports needed by senior management for various initiatives, events and daily activities.
• Draw up a public tree inventory and make sure it is up to date.
• Inspect trees, recommend appropriate arboricultural work and establish intervention priorities.
• Respond to and process complaints and requests, provide information on the terms and conditions of by-laws and ordinances initiated by the City and provide the information requested.
• Ensure communication between the various divisions of other City departments.
• Perform any other related task.

Job requirements:

The applicant must hold a college diploma in an appropriate sector and profile. One year of experience in a similar position is required, as well as sufficient knowledge of French and English to sustain a conversation.

The position also requires the following:
• Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s licence;
• Knowledge of diseases and insect pests, plant species, pesticides, biopesticides, fertilizers, principles of integrated pest management and cultivated land maintenance practices;
• Sound knowledge of urban botany, horticulture and arboriculture and of plant and grass quality assessment;
• Tact and courtesy;
• Ability to work independently;
• Ability to draft technical reports and short texts;
• An ISA Certified Arborist credential will be considered an asset;
• Knowledge of irrigation and horticultural and arboricultural equipment and machinery will be considered an asset;
• Holding a Certificate of Authorization for pesticide-use projects, issued by the Quebec Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and the Fight against Climate Change will be considered an asset.


For the period between Thanksgiving and the first (1rst) Monday of May: Monday to Friday inclusively, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., minus one (1) hour for lunch.

For the period between the first (1rst) Monday of May and Thanksgiving: Monday to Thursday inclusively, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., minus forty-five (45) minutes for lunch; Friday, 8:00 a.m. to noon.
